Pub nomenclature doesn’t stand up
I was interested to read your article regarding “vertical drinking” (Curbs on vertical drinking in Soho pubs to go ahead as Khan criticises council’s ‘breathtaking arrogance’, 8 September). When I was a lad we used to call this “drinking”. It’s a bit like “wild swimming”. Again, in my day, we used to call this “swimming”. Whatever next? Eyeball reading? Horizontal sleeping? Mobile walking? Audible talking? Joe Hyde Bilsborrow, Lancashire • Re your report (UN votes to adopt new world map that shows Africa’s true scale, 4 September), it’s good to see the UN catching up with the Guardian, which uses an equal-area world map in the “The week that was” feature in Saturday’s paper. Many of us in geography classrooms have been using Equal Earth maps, such as the Peters projection, for years. Dave Weight Former secondary school geography teacher, Leeds • In the US, we also have balaclava-wearing anti-immigrant thugs swarming our streets (‘Army of Christian patriots’: how a black-clad vigilante group swarmed Portsmouth, 8 September), except we give them deadly weapons, a uniform and a salary. We call them ICE. Catherine Wiley New York, US • As the author of the book Live Well Live Long, I’d like to wave the flag for nominative undeterminism (Letters, 8 September). Peter Deadman Hove, East Sussex • On 17 October 2008 I had a letter published about the number of candlesticks on the cabinet table. Geoff Wicks Derby • This is getting me into a pickle. Peter Branston Brentford, London • Have an opinion on anything you’ve read in the Guardian today? Please email us your letter and it will be considered for publication in our letters section.
